Pennsylvania ranks second in the nation for number of structurally deficient bridges, according to the U.S. Department of Transportation’s 2017 National Bridge Inventory database, writes Stacey Federoff for the Philadelphia Business Journal.

There are 4,173 bridges in Pennsylvania that “may not be imminently unsafe, (but) they are in need of attention.” That number amounts to 18 percent of the state’s total number of bridges.

Iowa tops the deficient bridge list with 5,607 bridges in need of repairs, and Oklahoma is in third place with 3,234. Washington, D.C., Nevada, Delaware, Hawaii, and Utah have the least.

More than 54,000 of the nation’s more than 612,000 bridges are rated “structurally deficient.” This amounts to one structurally deficient bridge for every 27 miles of major highway.

PennDOT and its development partner in the 25-year, $899 million Rapid Bridge Replacement Project announced in December that 218 bridges had been improved and re-opened.
