Eddystone is seeking a $1.3 million grant from the state to redevelop the 1874 Village section of the community on the south side of the Industrial Highway, writes Barbara Ormsby for the Daily Times.

The borough applied for the grant in December 2016. Borough engineer Lisa Catania reported at a recent borough council meeting that the grant application has passed the first phase of the approval process.

The four-block area, where “tenement housing” was originally constructed for employees of the Eddystone Print Works textile factory, includes a community facility known as Lighthouse Hall, a gothic-style structure that served as a town hall when the factory was in operation.

The project seeks to redevelop the interiors of the houses while retaining the facades. Many of the houses are vacant. It also includes plans for the redevelopment of open space, acquisition of Lighthouse Hall, which is currently privately owned, and access to the Delaware River for waterfront recreation.
