Resilience is something that can be developed to help us bounce back from adversity, writes Colleen Lelli, an education professor at Cabrini, for the university’s magazine.

Sheryl Sandberg, Facebook’s Chief Operating Officer, wrote this in the book – Option B: Facing Adversity, Building Resilience, and Finding Joy – she co-authored after her husband died.

“Resilience isn’t a fixed trait – it’s a muscle we can build and it’s never too late to start,” she said.

While it might seem difficult at first, there are ways we can work on developing both our resilience and grit. The most important is to be optimistic, as it can be infectious and create an environment full of positive people.

It’s also essential to rewrite your story, look ahead, and persevere while rebuilding your life. While having the support network of family, friends, and services can help build resilience, studies have shown that even more can be built up from helping other people.

Finally, she said, it’s important to establish goals and live a purposeful and full life.
