Ryan Howard is renowned for his time with the Philadelphia Phillies, when he hit 382 home runs and made three All-Star teams, but today, his attention is focused on Radnor’s SeventySix Capital, writes Jeff Haden for Inc. magazine.

Working with entrepreneurs is something Howard always wanted to do after baseball. He has partnered with Wayne Kimmel and Jon Powell in the firm that just closed its latest fund investing in sports technology startups.

“The V.C. world is something that has interested me for a long time,” he said. “I’ve always been a people person. I’ve always wanted to help people. What better way than to help young entrepreneurs realize their dreams.”

Being a famous athlete has also helped Howard gain credibility within the business community. It has become common for athletes, actors, and musicians to branch out past their primary professions.

Now, when listening to pitches, Howard first looks for passion behind the project before considering the financials. However, he said that being well prepared is crucial when pitching.

“Make sure everything is dialed in and buttoned up,” he said.
