The inaugural Upper Darby International Festival drew thousands of people to the 69th Street Corridor to celebrate diversity, writes Kenneth Hilario for the Philadelphia Business Journal.

The area’s first-of-its-kind festival was hosted by Upper Darby Township and the Upper Darby Multicultural Commission. The organizers expected only approximately 1,000 people to attend, and were pleasantly surprised by the massive turnout.

“I am pleased to report that all went extremely well and estimates have the crowd at 4,500,” said Upper Darby Mayor Tom Micozzie.

This success helps officials who have been trying to draw people to the area with projects, including a $6 million digital theater complex (Studio Movie Grill), and to attract national retailers such as H&M and Old Navy.
