Delaware County’s political importance was emphasized last month when prominent Republicans flocked here to promote their tax reform bill, writes Rick Kauffman for the Daily Times.

The last week of September saw Sen. Pat Toomey, Rep. Pat Meehan, and the Speaker of the House, Paul Ryan, visit the county. Meehan is on the House Ways and Means Committee, which worked on the new tax bill, and he introduced Speaker Ryan to the workers at Penn Machine in Aston.

“He made the tax reform announcement yesterday, and here he is today,” said Meehan.

The proposal is to “simplify” the tax code by reducing the number of tax brackets to just 12, 25, and 35 percent. However, no one has yet outlined the income ranges for each of the brackets. The aim is also to reduce corporate tax from 35 to 20 percent.

Toomey, who serves on the Senate Finance Committee, visited the Delaware County Chamber of Commerce in Springfield to discuss the incoming bill.

Currently, “we’ve got a tax code that creates an incentive to have a multinational headquartered company anywhere but the United States of America,” he said.
