May’s Water Ice is celebrating seven decades of serving the Chester community with its delicious and cooling treats, writes Rick Kauffman for the Daily Times.

The Italian ice shop has been a Chester staple since 1947. Owner Kevin May said that, while the city itself has seen dramatic changes over the years, many of his customers span several generations.

“We’ve been serving families and children and their children’s children,” said May. “They call us family.”

Every day during the summer, May’s serves nearly 300 customers. This is in no small part due to the inventive concoctions May has created over the years.

One of his latest hits is a delicious combination of strawberry lemonade and lemon. However, May always reminds customers of the dangers should they indulge in their treat too quickly.

“You have to watch out for the brain freeze,” warned May. “One time a guy in line got it so bad, he had the Italian ice in one hand and a beer in the other, and he slapped his forehead and dropped his beer on the ground.”
