Football All-Stars to Compete in Hero Bowl Benefiting Families of First Responders

Alongside Haverford football coach Joe Gallagher, left, and Academy Park coach Jason Vosheski, Delaware County Councilman Michael Culp, center, announced the 41st annual Hero Bowl will be held June 1 at Cardinal O’Hara High School.

Every year, it seems our communities are shaken by the tragic loss of a brave first responder, whether he or she serves as police officers, firefighters, or emergency medical personnel.

When that happens, the Delaware County community comes together to support the families and fellow first responders.

Since 1977, the Hero Scholarship Committee has been raising funds to provide scholarship aid to the children of Delaware County police officers, firefighters, and EMS personnel who lost their lives in the line of duty. Since its founding, 35 young people have received scholarships through the Hero Scholarship Fund.

One of the main fundraisers is the Hero Bowl, an all-star football game that involves the top athletes from local high schools. This year marks the 41st anniversary of the Hero Bowl, which is set for 7:30 PM on Thursday, June 1, at Cardinal O’Hara High School in Springfield.

Delaware County Council recently recognized the dedicated volunteers and coaches who make the Hero Bowl a success, as well as the sponsors, including Franklin Mint Federal Credit Union, Outback Steakhouse, Widener University, TD Bank, Comcast, Premier Orthopedic, PECO, and Boeing. The sponsors were joined by Criminal Investigation Division Detective Robert Lythgoe, President of the Hero Scholarship Fund.

All proceeds from the Hero Bowl benefit the Hero Scholarship Fund. Tickets are $5 and are also available for purchase at all Franklin Mint Credit Union branches located in Delaware County and at the gate the evening of the game.

“I’d like to stress the importance of this Hero Fund,” said councilman Michael Culp. “One of the greatest tragedies a community can suffer is the loss of a police officer or emergency responder. Council is committed to supporting our police and will remember and pay tribute to our fallen heroes.

“These men and women are police officers, firefighters, and emergency responders. But they are also fathers, husbands, and friends. As the name of our fund indicates, they are heroes. And the Hero Scholarship Fund is one way we can help families in Delaware County if the worst happens.”
