Community YMCA of Eastern Delco Offers Free Membership to Train for Senior Games

By

Delaware County residents, 50 and older, are invited to participate in the 27th annual Delaware County Senior Games beginning on June 12.

Hundreds of athletes, 50 and older, will once again gather at venues across the county this summer for the 27th annual Delaware County Senior Games.

For two weeks, beginning on June 12, seniors will participate in Olympic-style sporting events like Billiards, Track and Field, Bowling, and Horseshoes. There are competitive events for every activity level.

The Delaware County Senior Games are sponsored by Delaware County Council, the Department of Parks and Recreation, Destination Delco, and the County of Delaware Services for the Aging (COSA).

The Senior Games encourage residents to stay socially and physically active throughout the year. Physical activity, even moderate, can help seniors by improving their quality of life, increasing mental capacity, preventing disease, improving healing, increasing balance, and increasing life expectancy.

Before participating in the Senior Games, or any athletic or recreational activity, it is prudent to prepare yourself to prep the body and prevent injury.

This year, the Community YMCA of Eastern Delaware County is partnering with the Delaware County Senior Games by not only hosting the return of the swimming events this year to be held at Ridley High School, but by also offering athletes a free one-month membership at one of two local YMCAs to help prepare for the games.

To be eligible for this free one-month membership, registration forms must be received by May 10.

Once registered, participants can visit either of the following YMCAs between May 15-June 9 to begin preparing for the games:

  • Lansdowne YMCA at 2104 Garrett Road in Lansdowne
  • Ridley Area YMCA at 900 South Avenue in Secane

Registration forms will be available in mid-April at http://www.delcoseniorgames.org/, at the Parks and Recreation Department at 1671 North Providence Road in Upper Providence, and at other locations throughout the county.
