Almost 900 young scientists tested their inventions and science knowledge in dozens of events at the 2017 Southeastern Pennsylvania Science Olympiad Regional Competition on Wednesday at Neumann University.

Students from 60 middle and high schools in Bucks, Chester, Delaware, Montgomery, and Philadelphia counties competed for medals in two age groups (grades 6-9 and grades 9-12) and for a place in the state competition.

Strath Haven Middle School and Harriton High School won their respective divisions.

This year’s events included Electric Vehicles, Helicopters, Hovercraft, Robot Arms, Roller Coaster, and Wind Power. The Bottle Rocket contest, a crowd favorite every year, almost had to be canceled because of rain before an unexpected break in the weather allowed launches to occur.

Neumann University, known for its Nursing and Health Sciences programs, has hosted the regional Science Olympiad for four years.

Dr. Patricia Strobl, an assistant professor of biology and head of the Math and Science Department, served as site director for the event.

Launched in 1985, Science Olympiad is now one of the premier science competitions in the nation. The organization’s events challenge students, teach them about career choices, and introduce them to practicing scientists.
