An impressive upgrade to their home is now on the schedule of the reigning NCAA men’s basketball champions, as their shot at $60 million in renovations found nothing but net before Villanova’s board of trustees.

Led by a $22.6 million donation from 1963 Villanova grad William Finneran, the project is slated to begin this June and finish in time for the 2018-19 basketball season, when it will debut as the newly renamed Finneran Pavilion.

“The Finneran Pavilion will be a gathering place in which the ’Nova Nation can take great pride, and its impact will be felt on our program for years to come,” men’s coach Jay Wright said.

While under construction next season, the Villanova basketball teams will split up, with the men at the Wells Fargo Center and the women at the Jake Nevin Field House. Also, the Philadelphia Freedoms tennis team will play later this year at Saint Joseph’s Michael J. Hagan Arena instead of at the Pavilion.

“The majority of my coaching career I have called the Pavilion home, and like any home after 31 years, it is in need of an update,” women’s coach Harry Perretta said. “The Pavilion and the events that take place there mean a great deal to the Villanova community.”

Details about what the building will look like after the overhaul are scant.
