With the increasing number of millennials opting for urban living, developers are attempting to meet this growing demand by building huge vertical neighborhoods in major cities, writes Lauren deLisa Coleman for Forbes.

Radnor-based Brandywine Realty Trust is spearheading one of the first of these projects with its FMC Tower at 2929 Walnut Street in Cira Centre South in Philadelphia. The 862,000-square-foot, $385 million tower is being developed by the company along with AKA, which will provide the residential portion of the project.

The slender building, designed by Pelli Clarke Pelli Architects, is LEED-certified and features a large, elevated park that can also be used as a space for public events.

The residential area located between floors 30 to 46 is the most captivating part of the building. This collection of hotel, extended-stay, and traditional rentals will be known as AKA University City with 268 luxury hotel and apartment spaces. Guests and tenants will be able to enjoy beautifully designed living spaces accentuated by panoramic views and high ceilings.

The 18-month project, expected to be complete by early 2017, will include restaurants and retail shops. There will also be a floor full of amenities, including a gym, pool, yoga studio, and areas for dining and conferences.
