PECO just finished pumping $32 million into a smart-grid substation that will help get more business coursing through the Marcus Hook Industrial Complex.

PECO’s new electric distribution substation was outfitted with fiber-optic technology and real-time component monitoring through thermal imaging, according to a Philadelphia Inquirer report by Andrew Maykuth.

After spending almost a year and a half on the project, the energy provider will now be able to convert incoming 220,000-volt power lines into 13,000-volt lines for big customers and entire Marcus Hook neighborhoods.

The smart-grid project is part of PECO’s $500 million in annual equipment upgrades and maintenance.
