David Barrett, a political science professor at Villanova and expert on the Bay of Pigs Invasion, is taking the Central Intelligence Agency to court to try to obtain the final volume of documents on an event the government would rather forget, writes Victor Fiorillo for Philadelphia Magazine.

Barrett, the author of two books on the CIA, became interested in the subject when he stumbled across a box at the national archives marked “CIA Miscellaneous.” In it was the first of five detailed volumes on the Bay of Pigs Invasion written by the CIA’s own historian, Jack Pfeiffer.

As the volume was declassified, Barrett delved into it and discovered a fascinating amount of detail, including the fact that the CIA director had met with the heads of large corporations with big money in Cuba.

“He was telling them, ‘We’re going to do something,’” said Barrett.

Since then, the CIA has declassified all but the fifth volume, which Barrett believes may have details on how the invasion failed. He has already submitted three Freedom of Information requests to no avail, as the agency claims the fifth volume is an unfinished draft.

Now under the new FOI Act reform bill, Barrett is taking the CIA to court in an attempt to get the document released.

“It’s just crazy,” he said. “It’s been over half a century. The government classifies things for way too long.”
