After a 16th-place finish in the 100-meter backstroke at the 2016 Rio Olympics on Sunday, and setting records for Penn Sate University, Shane Ryan came up short during the 100M Freesyle qualifying rounds Tuesday afternoon, finishing 40th overall.

Competing for his father’s native country of Ireland, Ryan will attempt the 50M Freestyle on Thursday afternoon with hopes of winning big for himself, his father and his University.

Regardless of his Olympic finish today, Ryan is a champion. “With his inaugural Olympic performance Sunday, Ryan was the first Lion men’s swimmer to advance out of the preliminaries and the highest finishing in program history.” He was also “the first Irish swimmer to advance to the semifinals at the Olympics since the 2008 Beijing games.”
