A study conducted by Havertown-based Zoo Advisors has played a critical role in detailing how a multimillion-dollar master plan adopted by Potawatomi Zoo of South Bend, Ind. will benefit the local economy, writes Erin Blasko for the South Bend Tribune.

The study estimated that the zoo’s $37 million master plan will bring $343 million to the local economy and support 652 jobs within 10 years.

Additionally, the study projects a 60 percent increase in zoo attendance, plus other employment and economic benefits. It comes at a time when the zoo is pushing for a one percent food and beverage tax in St. Joseph County to help pay for the plan.

“We’re excited about these numbers, because it really shows the positive impact the master plan can have on the community,” said Marcy Dean, executive director of the facility.

Developed in cooperation with GLMV Architecture of Wichita, the plan calls for new North American, Asian, and African animal exhibits, an education center, restaurant, and new play areas.

Dean said that, in addition to supporting the proposed tax, the study shows “that dollars brought into the zoo for the master plan have a positive impact on the community.”
