It was a tough competition, but the reigning champions of 21 years successfully defended their crown during the Delaware County Envirothon competition, securing another victory for Penncrest, writes Anne Neborak for Delaware County News Network.

The rainy weather did not deter high school teams from Sun Valley, Glen Mills, Strath Haven, Haverford, and Penncrest from facing off in a competition on who was the most knowledgeable about wildlife, aquatics, current events, soil, and forestry.

Various agencies, including the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the Delaware County Institute of Science, participated in the event, each manning one of the six stations set up for the competition.

“It’s an opportunity to insure today’s youth are learning about the important issues that affect our environment and the value of our natural resources,” said Brian Vadino, a watershed specialist with the Delaware County Conservation District.

Penncrest’s Gold and Red teams secured first and second place with a combined score of 919 points, securing places in the statewide competition at the University of Pittsburgh Johnston event.
