Uno Chicago Grill Coming to Chester

By

Chester is set to get a major chain restaurant this year, writes Kenneth Hilario of the Philadelphia Business Journal.

An Uno Chicago Grill is currently being constructed at 15th Street and Providence Avenue, with a targeted opening date of early June. The restaurant will stand at 10,073 square feet, which includes a patio, and can seat 224 guests inside and 92 on the patio.

The addition of a popular eatery could be a boon for Chester, as city officials said it would not only create jobs and revenue for the city, but also act as a stimulus for further economic development and growth.

According to Hilario, the property is leased by Widener University, which is a minority owner of the restaurant with franchisee Thomas Bock of Ernest Bock & Sons Inc.

Widener took a tax-exempt piece of land and made it taxable, according to Joseph J. Baker, Widener’s senior vice president for administration and finance.

The restaurant will employ about 100 people, which will include residents and students. Gross revenue in the first year of business is expected to be $2.5 million to $3 million, according to the university.

Chester Mayor Thaddeus Kirkland, who took office in January, hopes the addition of Uno will have a ripple effect when it comes to economic development and attract more businesses to Chester.

“The reality is that Chester is the No. 1 place now for growth in the industry,” Kirkland said. “The perception is that businesses and families cannot grow in Chester. Uno’s coming; you see that perception is false.

“The hope is that everyone will get on board because Chester is on the move.”
