Tag With Purpose: LinkedIn Tagging Etiquette That Works

Great Careers Logo

Tagging on LinkedIn can expand your reach, strengthen relationships, and increase engagement, but only when used thoughtfully.

Whether you’re mentioning a connection or company in a post, identifying people in photos, or tagging company pages in photos, strategic tagging helps your content reach relevant audiences without creating notification fatigue.

When Tagging Adds Value

Tag people or organizations when they have a clear connection to your content.

Examples include:

  • Thanking event speakers, attendees, or collaborators
  • Highlighting clients, partners, or vendors (with permission)
  • Sharing insights from an article, podcast, or webinar
  • Recognizing employees, mentors, or colleagues
  • Mentioning the companies discussed in your post
  • Tagging people and company pages in photos from professional events

The key question is simple: Would this person expect to be included in this conversation?

If the answer is no, reconsider the tag.

Best Practices for Tagging

  • Prioritize relevance over reach.
  • Limit the number of tags to avoid overwhelming your audience.
  • Double-check that you are tagging the correct profile or company page.
  • Ask permission before tagging clients or sharing photos.
  • Space out mentions naturally throughout your content unless it’s appropriate to list multiple names at the end.
  • Remember that company pages can also be tagged in posts and photos.

Tagging Mistakes to Avoid

Avoid tagging people solely to increase impressions or trigger notifications.

Over-tagging, tagging unrelated influencers, or repeatedly tagging the same individuals can damage your credibility and discourage future engagement.

LinkedIn members can adjust their settings to control who can mention or tag them, and remove unwanted tags. Company pages can also be untagged from photos.

Understand LinkedIn Visibility

Not every tag will guarantee visibility, as some people may choose to remove the tag or decide in advance they don’t want to be tagged at all.

LinkedIn’s algorithm considers factors such as relevance, relationships, and engagement quality. Tagged members may receive a notification, but your post is not automatically shown to all of their connections.

As AI-generated content and automated engagement increase, authentic interactions matter more than ever. Meaningful mentions that contribute to a conversation are more effective than mass-tagging strategies.

Tag with intention, provide context, and focus on building genuine professional relationships. The reach should be a result, not the goal.

If you are a job seeker, some companies may add the Actively Recruiting tag to their posts.
