A 12-year-old from Chester is earning national attention during the World Cup, and it has nothing to do with what’s happening on the field.
Ava Nichols designed a soccer jersey that is now hanging in art galleries across the country, according to staff for 6abc.
Nichols created the jersey through Design FC, a nonprofit that introduces young people to sports and design as a creative outlet.
She was selected from hundreds of students in the program, which partnered with 37 nonprofits around the world for a World Cup-inspired initiative.
Each organization chose a single young designer to create a jersey representing both themselves and their country.
For Design FC, the choice was easy. Oliver Steinglass said Nichols stood out for her engagement with the program and her artistic talent.
Nichols spent two months developing the design, and the details tell her story.
It features American monuments, a bald eagle, and Exit 6 off Route 320, a quiet local nod to her Chester roots.
Along the way, the assignment grew into something bigger, teaching her creative skills and broader life lessons.
“I’m, like, making a positive impact on my community, and just people will be able to see my jersey around the world, that feels really good,” she said.
Her jersey is currently on display in a New York art gallery alongside 37 others, and it is expected to travel to Los Angeles next.
