Upper Darby Fire Company Selling West Chester Pike Station

This firehouse is putting up for sale by volunteer Upper Darby Fire Co. Nu. 1 after a township funding change.

Upper Darby Fire Company Number One announced it is selling its firehouse on West Chester Pike after a township funding change, writes Lena Tillett for NBC 10 Philadelphia.

Past practice provided monthly stipends to volunteer fire companies to cover upfront costs.

Now, companies must pay expenses first, then seek reimbursement after an evaluation by Upper Darby’s fire chief, Nick Martin.

Fire Company One President Peter Rorke said costs keep rising, forcing the company to sell the building.

“We’re sad that we have to take this action, but we have to look forward and protect the investments that we have made over the years to try to take care of the volunteers that sacrifice all their time and energy,” Rorke said. “We still want to remain as a nonprofit and try to help out not only our members but also some of the other volunteer fire companies within Upper Darby Township.”

Township officials said the funding change ensures accountability for taxpayer dollars.

Martin said Upper Darby would “take all measures necessary to ensure continued fire protection and continued operations out of this firehouse.”

Most fire calls in the township are now handled by paid firefighters.
