A Bench for the Ages: Celebrating Community, Conservation, and Shared Milestones

A group gathers at the General Recreation park bench celebrating Upper Merion's 50th year as a Tree City USA reward recipient and the nation's 250th anniversary.

General Recreation Inc. has donated a memorial bench to Upper Merion Township in honor of two milestones: the 250th Anniversary of the United States and Upper Merion Township’s 50th consecutive year as a Tree City USA award recipient.

These occasions speak to enduring values of stewardship, civic pride, and commitment to the natural spaces that define a community, values that General Recreation aims to reflect in its work.

The bench was officially dedicated on Saturday, April 18th, during Upper Merion’s Annual Earth Day Festival.

The Festival is a beloved community event that brings together residents to celebrate both Arbor Day and Earth Day.

The setting could not have been more fitting. Surrounded by the natural beauty that Upper Merion has worked for half a century to protect and nurture, the dedication was a reminder of what park stewardship can build over generations.

Daniel Russell, Director of Parks & Recreation for Upper Merion Township, offered warm words of appreciation, noting the long-standing relationship between the Township and General Recreation.

He talked about the many decades of service the General Recreation team has provided to the Upper Merion park system and its residents.

“We are grateful for those words and for the trust that the Township has placed in us over the years,” reads a statement from General Recreation.

For General Recreation, this donation was never simply about a bench. It was an opportunity to give something lasting back to a community we have been privileged to serve for so many years, the statement read.

“Parks are where memories are made, where families gather, and where communities come together — and we are honored to have contributed, in a small way, to that story in Upper Merion Township,” the statement read.

General Recreation in Newtown Square serves Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Delaware, and has helped hundreds of community leaders and organizations build playgrounds that are safe, aesthetically pleasing, and made to last.

General Recreation projects are supported by expert services, including site evaluation, playground design, installation, and community build services.
