West Chester Community Mourns Student After Tragic Vehicle Accident

West Chester University student Garrett Nicholas was tragically struck by a car on over the weekend and later died from his injuries at Paoli Hospital, leaving the community and school mourning his death and celebrating his life, reports staff and Walter Perez at 6abc.

21-year-old Nicholas of Lehigh County was crossing South High Street at Union Street at about 1:30 AM when a car hit him, propelling him 70 feet forward.

The driver pulled over a block away and West Chester Borough Police said they are complying with the investigation. As of right now, no charges have been filed and no arrests have been made.

Nicholas’ roommate Jimmy Kane was nearby at the time of the incident, saying he heard everything happen and realized he had missed calls on his phone. Kane saw Nicholas at the accident scene.

“It was hard to be in a bad mood around him. Just looking at the way he conducted himself and his charisma. Just his personality all the time. He was someone who gave you hope,” said Kane.

On Sunday, hundreds of students and community members went to the Pi Kappa Alpha house to leave flowers and their condolences. Many students, like Kane and sophomore Mya Sinwell, remember Nicholas for his smile and personality.

“One day it’s a bright day and then it’s just not. It’s a super tragic story. I think everyone is feeling a super dark and heavy weight on them today and yesterday,” said Sinwell.
