“We’re kind of like ‘Cheers’ without the alcohol,” said Donna Travers, co-owner of Travers Food Market in Lansdowne. “We know everyone’s name, and if we don’t, we’ll get to know you.”
David and Donna Travers of Ridley are celebrating the 40th anniversary of Travers Food Market, a place known as much for its community warmth as it is for its food, writes Peg DeGrassa for the Daily Times.
And that food is pretty good, with chicken salad “to die for,” according to one customer, and plenty of fresh, homemade daily meals.
Travers started Montbard Market, then became Country Butcher when it was put up for sale.
Travers was working as a market operator at two local Wawa stores at the time and saw an opportunity to go into business with his brother, Fred.
Thus was born Travers Food Market, now a decades-long family business.
David’s wife Donna became his store partner after Fred retired in 2003. Daughter Christina is the head chef, and daughter Brianna handles store advertising and marketing.
Over time, the family has remodeled the market, enlarged the deli, expanded the menu, and updated the layout.
