Talluto’s in Ridley Park proves that while Philadelphia’s signature sandwich may be the cheesesteak, the region also has an abundance of other great long-roll offerings, including its Italian hoagie, writes BZ Maestro for BZ Maestro Eats.
The popular deli and Italian gourmet shop dates back to the 1960s, first opening in Philadelphia’s Italian Market before adding its Ridley Park location in 2013. Despite being a newer outpost, the shop maintains the classic look and feel of traditional old-world delis.
The sandwich menu is relatively compact, featuring six-inch options alongside standard 12-inch sandwiches.
Among the offerings are two Italian hoagies: the Regular Italian, which includes ham capicola, Genoa salami, sharp provolone, and prosciutto, and the Old World, made with dry-cured capicola, Genoa salami, sharp aged provolone, and prosciutto, both finished with vegetables and seasoning.
A local favorite, the Old World six-inch sandwich strikes a satisfying balance, being filling but without being excessive. The ingredients are also well balanced, delivering a cohesive flavor in a fresh roll with a chewy crust. The addition of both red and white onions brings an extra sharpness that elevates the overall taste.
