Havertown Native Tom Sredenschek Retiring as Fox 29 Sports Director

Fox 29 sports director Tom Sredenschek stands on the court after Villanova defeated North Carolina in the NCAA men's basketball championship on April 5, 2016.

Tom Sredenschek is retiring as Fox 29’s sports director after 40 years in the business, writes Rob Tornoe for The Philadelphia Inquirer.

In that time, Sredenschek covered the weird and wild side of Philly sports.

Known casually as ‘Sreder’ the Havertown native and Penncrest graduate got a big send-off Friday from colleagues and former and current Philly sports stars, including Charles Barkley, Kyle Schwarber, and Donovan McNabb.

Fox 29’s news director and vice president Jim Driscoll, called Sredenschek “a mentor to many” and “a brilliant storyteller and producer.”

“I have been very blessed in my career,” Sredenschek said. “They let me grow my role and weren’t afraid to take chances, and I’ve really enjoyed that.”

Sredenschek is particularly grateful to Howard Eskin. He was only a year out of Penn State when Eskin hired him at age 22 to produce a 10 PM newscast at the station featuring Eskin.

Sredenschek went on to cover two Eagles’ Super Bowl victories, a Phillies World Series championship, and Villanova’s men’s basketball championship in 2016.

He helped launch Eagles Gameday in 1994, and “Walk 100 Yards,” with player and coach interviews conducted while he walked the length of a football field.
