Media Food Bank has Been Helping Feed the Hungry for 30 Years

Rev. Laurie Ann Rockard, director, Media Food Bank talks about the work of the volunteers , who have been helping feed hungry families since 1995.

Volunteers in Media Borough have worked for 30 years to make sure people don’t go hungry, writes Nick Iadonisi for 6abc.

“People who live here care about food insecurity and don’t want people to be without food…the mission is to not only feed our neighbors, but also to do so with integrity and respect and honor,” said Laurie Ann Rookard, director of the Media Food Bank.

The Food Bank is recognizing the 30-year milestone of its first opening in 1995.

Twice a week, those who need food can find it at First Church in Media, where the food bank is located.

Visitors can pick items from a community choice room. There’s also a pharmacy with baby food, diapers, and adult care items.

The food bank is primarily there for Delaware County residents, though residents from any county are welcome. About 250 families are helped every week, Rookard said.

On a regular basis, RISE Community Support Services brings its participants to the Food Bank to get involved.

“It’s breathtaking what people will do for other people, and I’m always happy when I’m here,” said Ellen Peskin, Community Choice Room Coordinator at Media Food Bank.
