Wayne native Matt Freese, a former Philadelphia Union player, is looking to debut with the U.S. Men’s National Soccer Team as a goalkeeper this summer in the FIFA World Cup, writes Chris O’Connell for Fox 29.
Freese, who grew up in Wayne and attended Episcopal Academy in Newtown Square, is playing it cool.
“The moment you look too far in advance, too far in the future, you forget about the present, you forget about improving every day, staying healthy, getting your mind right,” he said.
Ferese is currently the frontrunner for the starting goalkeeper spot when the U.S. team plays Paraguay in Los Angeles on June 12.
He’s now a goalkeeper for the New York City Football Club.
Freese has played soccer most of his life, starting on the youth fields in Delaware County.
Freese’s family plans to travel to Los Angeles to watch him play on the world stage. His mother calls it a “pinch me kind of moment.”
“It would mean everything for my family to be there, for my mom to be able to watch, that it would be really special and very focused on making it true,” said Freese.
