Philadelphia Eagles’ Philly Special Will Be Subject of New ESPN ‘30 for 30’ Documentary

ESPN's newest 30 for 30 will be focused on "The Philly Special," the iconic play from the Eagles' first Super Bowl victory in 2018.

ESPN has decided to use “The Philly Special” from Super Bowl LII as the subject of its newest 30 for 30 documentary, writes Tom Dougherty for CBS News Philadelphia.

The documentary, produced by NFL Films and directed by Shannon Furman and Angela Zender, will premiere on Friday, February 6 at 9 p.m.

“Everybody loves the Rocky movies, but they were fiction,” Zender said in the announcement. “The amazing thing about ‘The Philly Special’ is that it’s a real-life Rocky story.”

The new documentary will feature the five individuals who played a key part in the arguably most iconic play in Philadelphia Eagles history. They are former head coach Doug Pederson, quarterback Nick Foles, center Jason Kelce, running back Corey Clement, and tight end Trey Burton. The latter are the four players to touch the ball during that epic trick play.

With 38 seconds left in the first half, Foles lined up in the shotgun before moving behind his offensive line. With Foles standing behind tackle Lane Johnson, Kelce snapped the ball to Clement, who threw it to Burton, allowing Foles to get into the end zone for a wide open touchdown pass catch.

While it’s in the running for the greatest play in Philadelphia sports history, it almost didn’t happen at all.
