For Chester County residents who relied on the abruptly closed Di Bruno Bros. locations in Wayne and Ardmore, Carlino’s Market in West Chester offers a local, Italian-specialties alternative that has served the community for decades, writes Denali Sagner for The Philadelphia Inquirer.
Carlino’s Market began in 1983 in Ardmore as a family-owned pasta shop catering to Lower Merion’s Italian community. It has since become a suburban powerhouse, opening a second location in West Chester in 2007 and supplying nearby communities with prepared foods, baked goods, and premium groceries.
The brand has expanded beyond its local roots, with hundreds of grocery stores nationwide now carrying its products. Despite this growth, the company’s second- and third-generation leaders continue to honor its mom-and-pop shop origins.
Pasquale “Pat” Carlino, son of market founders Nicola and Angela Carlino, said the market has promoted clean eating for decades, long before influencers and foodies popularized it.
From its early days, Nicola used fresh tomatoes, cucumbers, and garden-grown herbs, and today Carlino’s still uses fresh produce, organic flour, and high-quality olive oil.
“Things that are trending now, we were doing 40 years ago,” said Pat Carlino.
