Wawa Is Getting Into the Electric Vehicle Supercharger Business

Wawa now has its own brand of electric vehicle superchargers.

Wawa is the biggest host for Tesla superchargers, with 2,115 stalls scattered among 223 store sites.

Now it’s partnered with the Tesla Supercharger for Business program to launch its own brand of supercharger in Alachua, Florida, writes Michelle Lewis for Electrek.

The Wawa-owned Alachua Supercharger site, located northwest of Gainesville, features 16 325 kW stalls.

Wawa sets the charging rate, which is $0.37/kWh, while Tesla installs and manages the fast chargers.

The convenience store chain has been working with Tesla for more than a decade.

Wawa hasn’t disclosed how many self-owned Supercharger sites it plans to open. It currently operates more than 1,200 stores across 14 states and Washington, DC.

Wawa and Sheetz are both investing in the electric vehicle charging business. Both chains have installed hundreds of fast chargers at their stores and created sit-down areas for electric vehicle drivers who have to wait for their vehicles to charge.

With a single fast charger costing $100,000, and only modest revenue generated from charging stations, companies like Wawa hope the chargers will lure electric vehicle drivers to the store, and bring them inside for food purchases, writes Samantha Hindman for The Cool Down.
