Swarthmore Has New Mayor in Former Fire Chief Conlen Booth

Swarthmore Mayor Conlen Booth appearing in a YouTube video from Crozer Health when he was an assistant fire chief for Swarthmore.

Conlen Booth was recently sworn in as the new mayor of Swarthmore, stepping into the role with more than two decades of emergency-management experience, writes Denali Sagner for The Philadelphia Inquirer.

Booth brings a deep professional background that includes oversight of emergency services for major hospitals and governments, paired with 25 years in Swarthmore’s fire department, including leadership as chief.

As a Nether Providence native and graduate of Strath Haven High School, the new mayor points to his emergency services background and long-standing ties to Swarthmore as key assets in guiding the borough. This includes the fallout from the closures of Crozer-Chester Medical Center and Taylor Hospital last year, budget pressures, and the possible consolidation of its fire department.

Booth plans to embrace his new position as a cheerleader for the borough, drawing visitors and fostering economic growth while protecting Swarthmore’s small-town character. He has also set his sights on reengaging Swarthmore College’s student body, which has recently shown less civic involvement.

“I already feel sentimental about this town,” said Booth, highlighting the people, restaurants, traditions, and community events that give it its unique sense of place.
