The Bucks County Commissioners has approved a comprehensive recreation, parks, and open space plan during their regular Wednesday meeting, writes Melinda Rizzo for the Bucks County Beacon.
Developed over six years after decades without an update, the plan aims to protect natural resources while strengthening community well-being and responding directly to resident needs, according to Angela Nagle, director of the Bucks County Parks and Recreation Department.
Bucks County operates 17 parks and three leased sites that together span 6,161 acres, with more than 3,000 additional acres of county-owned properties as well as open space across the county.
The new plan, which received public input prior to the Jan. 21 presentation, outlines long overdue maintenance, strategic improvements, and continued investments aimed at serving the county’s approximately 646,000 residents.
Findings from the informational discovery process showed that residents are seeking well-maintained parks, better access and usability, a strong commitment to environmental stewardship, and a modernized park system capable of meeting growing demand.
“They want safe, welcoming areas connected to surrounding communities; and the county to protect natural and historic resources that make Bucks County such a special place to live,” said Nagle.
