American Airlines Basic Economy Tickets Lose Frequent Flyer Perks

American Airlines has eliminated AAdvantage miles and Loyalty Points from basic economy ticket purchases made on or after Dec. 17.

American Airlines has tightened its frequent flyer perks associated with basic economy tickets purchased on or after December 17, writes Ashley Mahoney for AXIOS.

Under the change, travelers who purchase these fares will not earn AAdvantage miles or Loyalty Points.

Basic economy fares were introduced by American Airlines nine years ago as its lowest-priced ticket option. The fares had restrictions ranging from boarding order to upgrade eligibility, but travelers could still earn AAdvantage miles until this recent tightening of perks.

“We routinely evaluate our fare products to remain competitive in the marketplace,” said the airline. “Basic Economy customers will continue to receive one free personal item and one free carry-on bag, free snacks, soft drinks, and in-flight entertainment.”

Elite loyalty members of American Airlines will continue to be eligible for first-class upgrades on domestic flights when booking basic economy tickets.

The airline joins Delta, where travelers purchasing basic economy fares do not earn Delta SkyMiles.

Meanwhile, United, another competitor, allows basic economy customers to earn miles but restricts them to carrying a single personal item.

American Airlines operates major hubs at airports across the nation, and is Philadelphia International Airport’s largest carrier.
