The first public hearing on Dec. 16 seeking approval on a proposed Valley Forge Public Service Academy Charter School on the campus of Valley Forge Military Academy & College in Wayne took place Dec. 16 at a special meeting of the Radnor School Board.
The school would replace the Academy, slated to close at the end of the current academic year, writes Richard Ilgenfritz of the Daily Local News.
The goal is to start classes in September.
Politicians, police, and fire officials spoke of a need for a school focused on public service, according to Chris Massaro, a board member of the proposed charter school.
Massaro said there are significant workforce challenges in public service.
“There’s just not a lot of young people getting into these professions,” he said.
The proposed academy would serve students in grades six through 12, preparing graduates for careers in public safety, emergency response, and other public service fields, while also meeting high school diploma requirements.
The proposal received support from Ken Kearns, president of the Wayne Business Association, who believes it would bring new people to the businesses in Radnor.
A second public hearing is scheduled for Jan. 20.
