Veronica McKee has always been interested in pretty clothes, writes Gina Lizzo and Eileen Smith Dallabrida for Main Line Today.
The chief marketing officer of Haverford Trust in Wayne said even before elementary school, she was drawn to clothes that made her feel special.
One of her grandmothers taught her to sew and make custom clothes when she couldn’t find anything in the kids’ clothing section.
Her other grandmother bought her special outfits every year for her birthday, and they included luxurious fabrics like velvet, satin, or lace.
She also read her neighbor’s copy of Women’s Wear Daily.
“She was the same age as my grandmothers, but she was a drummer in a touring jazz band who let me try on her stage costumes,” McKee said.
Fashion boosts confidence, which is why these days McKee volunteers with the Wardrobe, a Philadelphia nonprofit working to end clothing insecurity by outfitting people for life or work.
In fact, her best fashion buy was her first pair of Manolo Blahniks, which she got for $60 at the Wardrobe when she was their board chair.
Her advice? Don’t follow every trend, and steer clear of poor-quality materials whenever possible.
