Many bird species are moving across Pennsylvania during their fall migration south, making Wissahickon Valley Park in Philadelphia a prime spot for bird watching, writes Kalena Thomhave for The Keystone.
Birds of prey are among the most well-known fall migrants, including falcons, eagles, vultures, and hawks. They draw a large number of birdwatchers as they soar across the skies during their autumn migration. The peak months for observing the hawks and other raptors are September and October. Hawk Mountain, that spans Berks and Schuylkill Counties, is one of the best locations for birdwatchers and nature enthusiasts to get the chance to catch these sightings.
Waterbirds begin their migration in mid-July and can be observed along the shores of Pennsylvania’s lakes and rivers. Shorebird migration reaches its peak in September, while waterfowl, including ducks and geese, are most abundant in November and December.
Songbirds, including sparrows and warblers — both common in Philadelphia — are typically visible during their evening migrations. Wissahickon Valley Park is an excellent location to observe these birds, which are most abundant in late September and October.
