Upland Youth Football Team Recovering From Deadly Sideline Shooting

The Upland Hurricanes, a youth football team, recently returned to the field for after witnessing a deadly shooting Sunday during a game in New Castle County, writes Steve Keeley for Fox 29 Philadelphia.

Lamar Massas, a 36-year-old Delaware father who was watching his son play against the Upland team, was killed in the shooting incident.  

The shooting took place on the sidelines of a youth football game at Eden Park in Wilmington.

The murder was witnessed by children and families at the game, leaving many traumatized.

As the Upland team returned to the field, devoted mothers offered pep talks to the young players.

“As a mother, that is a tough pill to swallow, and to let your kids see that. It’s a lot. I’m helping my kids through it. I’m trying my best as a mother,” said Janeya Roberts, a mother of two young players.

Coaches also met with parents, providing food, support, and offers of therapy for the children.

The team is practicing with borrowed gear, since a lot of their equipment was lost in the chaos.

The Hurricanes are seeking donations to replace shoes, shoulder pads, helmets, and jerseys.
