Tindley Tea Cafe is located within Tindley Temple United Methodist Church, a Philadelphia landmark founded by Reverend Charles Albert Tindley over a century ago, reports Jennaphr Frederick for FOX 29.
Tindley was a pioneer of what is now known as the soup kitchen, feeding people across Philadelphia and the greater tri-state area during the Great Depression, a time when resources were scarce.
With support from the church and its members, he managed to provide breakfast, lunch, and dinner to those in need. The church drew many notable visitors over the years, including Eleanor Roosevelt, who hosted the first National Democratic Women’s Luncheon on its grounds.
Tindley Tea Cafe is a “reincarnation of what was originally part of the fabric of the history of Philadelphia,” said the Tindley Tea Cafe team, “and we’re so happy to present this space for the community at large to come and dine. Fellowship, food, fun, community.”
People can often enjoy live music while tasting delicious food at the cafe, from tacos to fried fish to chicken waffles.
