About 52 employees are being laid off at Alloy Surfaces Co. Inc., a military contractor in Aston, writes Ariana Perez-Castells for The Philadelphia Inquirer.
The layoffs come as the company decides whether to close the Aston facility or sell the business.
Alloy Surfaces is part of Chemring Group PLC, a technology manufacturing and services company based in England for the defense, aerospace, and security industries. Customers include NATO, NASA and Space X.
Alloy Surfaces has manufactured infrared decoys that track missiles. Customers include the U.S. military and the British Royal Air Force.
“Over the past decade Chemring has seen a steady decrease in demand for its Alloy Surfaces Company’s pyrophoric decoys,” said company spokesperson Rupert Pittman via email. “Despite significant effort and engagement with its customers [Alloy Surfaces] has received insufficient orders to viably sustain operations as a stand-alone business.”
Layoffs are expected to start Aug. 30 and continue until the facility closes, expected by the end of December.
Alloy Surfaces had 616 workers across three Delaware County facilities as of 2007 and had $347 million in U.S. Army contracts.
Alloy laid off 145 employees in 2012, and announced another 63 workers were being laid off in Aston in 2021.
