Philadelphia Flyers Alumni Fundraise for ‘Stanley’ the Service Dog in Malvern

Stanley the service dog, who will work for a first responder or veteran after finishing training.

The Flyers Alumni Association has plans to train and donate a service dog to a veteran or first responder in need, writes Bill Meltzer for Philadelphia Flyers.

The Alumni Association partnered with Team Foster and America’s ServiceDogs to raise and fully train a Labrador retriever puppy to later donate to a veteran or first responder.

They surveyed fans to pick a name for the Labrador puppy, with the winning name being Stanley.

The first stage of training takes roughly eighteen months, with specialized training so that Stanley can support a higher quality of life for veterans in need.

The service dog donation comes as one of many charity events organized by the Flyers. The team’s Warrior hockey programs and 12 Days of Christmas donations also prioritize veteran and first responder support throughout the year.

“When you’re position to help someone, you should do it,” said Brad Marsh, Flyers Alumni Association president.

The Association will continue to fundraise with events across the greater Philadelphia region to fund initiatives like the service dog donation.
