Montgomery County State Rep. Greg Scott believes Pennsylvania’s 500 public school districts may be too many, writes Matthew Rink for Philly Burbs.
Scott represents the 54th District, covering Conshohocken, Plymouth Township, and Norristown. He recently announced plans to introduce legislation that would direct the Legislative Budget and Finance Committee to study what it would take to consolidate the districts down to just 100. This would, in Scott’s view, reduce overhead and relieve the pressure of rising property taxes.
“Costs for school districts and property taxes are only continuing to increase,” Scott wrote in a cosponsorship memo.
It’s not a new idea. Former Governor Ed Rendell proposed a similar consolidation plan in 2009. This was the same year the last school district merger was successful.
Scott’s memo argues that PA’s current structure perpetuates inequality. “The educational opportunities available to a child are often determined by the socio-economic status of their community, creating disparities in funding and resources,” he said.
While the proposal is still in its early stages, it has already reignited a long-standing debate about efficiency, equity, and what public education should look like across the state.
