St. Joseph’s Hires Former Penn Basketball Coach as Assistant Coach

Former Penn basketball coach Steve Donahue has been hired by St. Joseph’s head coach Billy Lange, will join as associate head coach.

Former Penn men’s basketball coach Steve Donahue has been hired by St. Joseph’s head coach Billy Lange and will join the staff as associate head coach, writes Jeff Neiburg for The Philadelphia Inquirer.

Donahue, who was dismissed earlier this year after nine seasons at Penn, will replace former associate head coach Justin Scott on the St. Joe’s bench. Scott was recently hired by Oklahoma.

Donahue has served as a Division I head coach since 2000, with the exception of one year. He spent ten seasons at Cornell before moving on to Boston College, where he coached for four seasons.

“In the last 30 years, there is not a single person I have talked more with about basketball philosophies, the challenge of head coaching leadership, and the pursuit of daily improvement than Steve,” said Lange.

Donahue, who was named Ivy League Coach of the Year at Penn in 2018, is a Delaware County native who began his coaching career at Springfield High School.

He already has a strong connection to St. Joe’s, with five of his siblings and his son having been Hawks.

“It’s more than a job, it’s home,” said Donahue.
