Jeffrey Lurie has built the Philadelphia Eagles into a premier NFL franchise, but his next challenge may be even bigger—bringing a Super Bowl to Philadelphia, writes Jeff Karr for CBS Sports.
The longtime owner and Wynnewood resident is committed to making it happen. Whether it becomes a reality depends on the future of Lincoln Financial Field.
The Linc is part of an older wave of open-air stadiums that predate the league’s shift toward retractable roofs. For Philadelphia to land a Super Bowl, the stadium would need a major renovation or be replaced with a dome. Lurie hasn’t ruled out the idea but certainly didn’t commit.
“I love outdoor football. I love it. I love the cold games. I like the hot games. I like the snow games,” Lurie said at Super Bowl media night. “On the other hand, Philadelphia deserves to host the Super Bowl.”
Since 2014, the NFL has avoided open-air Super Bowls in cold-weather cities, and the NCAA Final Four is exclusively held in domed stadiums. With the Eagles’ lease at The Linc set to expire in less than a decade, Lurie must soon decide whether to lead the charge for a retractable-roof stadium. If he does, Philadelphia could finally get its shot at hosting the biggest event in sports.
