The Colonial Theatre in Phoenixville is in need of costly repairs and is reaching out to the community for support, writes Shara Dae Howard for KYW Newsradio.
Originally called the Colonial Opera House, the theater hosted its first stage performance in 1903. This historic venue quickly became a magnet for renowned artists like Harry Houdini and Mary Pickford. Today, it remains the favorite place for many movie and concert-goers.
The Colonial Theatre also appears in the 1958 sci-fi classic The Blob, featuring the iconic scene of moviegoers fleeing in panic after being attacked by the monstrous Blob. This memorable moment inspired the creation of Blobfest, a popular event that celebrates both the film and the theater.
But being around for more than 120 years has created several problems for the building, including water infiltration, exterior damage, and brick-and-mortar issues – and that is not counting the interior issues.
The major repairs will cost $240,000.
“So far we have $70,000,” said Jennifer Carlson, executive director. “We’re applying for some grants.”
