There’s a unique memorial on display in Delaware County to honor the late President Jimmy Carter and his work with the nonprofit Habitat for Humanity, writes Justin Udo for KYW Newsradio.
Visitors to the Delaware County Government Center complex will now see a temporary standing door inside commemorating Carter’s humanitarian work to create a better future through affordable housing, said Philip Welch, director of Housing and Community Development for Delaware County,
“The door is sort of the symbol of homeownership, or home opportunities, that Jimmy Carter fought so hard for all to have,” said Welch. “Jimmy Carter was a fierce advocate for affordable housing and housing for all.”
While the door is on display, the public is invited to write messages on it to remember the 39th president.
Welch said the memorial also represents Delaware County’s resources to encourage affordable housing and housing stabilization.
State and county funds are being used for the Whole Home Repair program, partnering with Habitat for Humanity to stabilize 120 households with up to $50,000 in needed rehabilitation funds, Welch said.
Late next week, the memorial will move to Montgomery County.
