The low-cost carrier Frontier Airlines, the second largest airline at Philadelphia International Airport, has cut four routes from the airport, and has cut another temporarily during the winter season. The cuts began in January, writes Emma Dooling for Philadelphia Business Journal.
The Denver-based Frontier will halt service from PHL to Cleveland Hopkins International Airport; Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky International Airport; Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport; Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport.
A PHL route to Pittsburgh International Airport. was temporarily halted during the winter season but will be re-instated April 1.
Three of those routes had been launched ahead of the summer travel season in 2024.
Frontier began offering twice daily nonstop service between PHL and Pittsburgh, and daily nonstop service to Detroit on May 21. The added routes and flights increased Frontier’s presence at PHL by 47 percent.
The routes could be added back in the future, said Frontier spokesman Jennifer De La Cruz.
“We routinely review our network to evaluate route performance and make adjustments from time to time based on demand,” De La Cruz said.
The route cuts made at PHL are part of a larger pullback of 40 Frontier routes around the country.
Frontier executives noted in October that there was excess domestic flying capacity during the third quarter and so removed 37 percent of off-peak flying from the schedule.
