Trees along this section of St. David’s Road, the Aronimink Golf Club property in Newtown Square, could be coming down. Many are dead, dying or diseased, officials say.

The PGA wants to build a broadcast center at the Aronimink Golf Club in Newtown Square for the 2026 PGA Championship game coming there in May.

To do that, they have to clear up to 900 trees from 10 acres of woodland.

That plan is not going over well with some residents, writes Pete Bannon for the Daily Times.

A large group of residents questioned the project Monday at a Newtown Township supervisors meeting.

A  golf club property survey shows a lot of trees are dead, dying or diseased, and that 90 trees per acre would come down, with 836 trees replaced.

One resident was concerned about the old growth forest that would be disrupted, including trees 100 to 300 years old.

“Removal of these trees on 10 acres for three days of a PGA Tournament just hurts my soul that these should come down. Can’t we please find another location and save our old growth forest?” she asked.

Club member Bob Bowman said at least 1 acre will be reforested, with a commitment to plant 800 trees, he said.

Stormwater improvements in place for the game will remain, he added..
