1,000 Athletes Turn Out for Special Olympics Fall Fest at Villanova
It was the 36tth annual Pennsylvania Special Olympics Fall Fest this past weekend at Villanova University and more than 1,000 athletes competed, writes Beccah Hendrickson for 6abc.
Athletes could compete in events that included flag football, long-distance walking and running, and soccer.
“Everybody learns what inclusion is all about,” said Matt Aaron, the president of Pennsylvania Special Olympics. “When you come here to Villanova and you see Fall Fest, you see inclusion in action.”
Assisting the athletes were 5,000 student volunteers to help run the event.
“We have 100 students who work year-round to plan for it,” said Aaron. “When the athletes come here to campus and they interact with the students, it’s pure joy.”
The Fall Fest is an opportunity for the athletes to show off months of training.
Melissa Lorback, an athlete from Chester Springs, competed in two track events.
“The energy is so great. I love how everyone gets pumped up and how everyone is so welcoming,” she said.
Her teammate, Lisa Robinson, was also competing this fall and has made it to the awards podium a few times.
Both athletes said the camaraderie is more exciting than competing.
“Seeing and making new friends, seeing old friends,” said Robinson.
