Remembering Virgil L. Hill, Former Valley Forge Academy President

Rear Admiral Virgil L. Hill Jr.

Virgil L Hill Jr. who commanded nuclear-powered submarines, was director of special projects for naval intelligence, and who is a past president of the Valley Forge Military Academy and College in Wayne, has died.

The 86-year -old two-star rear admiral died Sept. 6 at Willow Valley Communities in Lancaster. He is a former resident of Wayne, writes Gary Miles for The Philadelphia Inquirer.

Rear Admiral Hill taught leadership and ethics classes for two years at Villanova’s School of Business.

He also worked for the chief of naval operations at the Pentagon, and was superintendent at the Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md., from 1988 to 1991, where he oversaw its restructuring.

He was president at Valley Forge Military Academy and College from 1993 to 2000. He is credited with growing and diversifying the school’s enrollment, expanding the campus and improving fundraising.

Rear Admiral Hill was commissioned an ensign in 1961, promoted to commander in 1975, captain in 1980, one-star rear admiral in 1987, and two-star rear admiral in 1989.

“He taught me that courage, honor, and integrity aren’t just words, but virtues to live by,” Maryland Gov. Wes Moore, once a cadet at Valley Forge, said in a tribute.
